Abstract

The skill of writing was very important for the students. It needs to be taught to the students at school. Teachers used numbers of strategies to help the students wrote more effectively. Concept mapping was one of those strategies which could activate the studentsÂ’ learning. In this study, the researcher analyzed about whether or not concept mapping affect the studentÂ’s writing achievement of eight grade at SMPN 13 Malang. The researcher used quasi-experimental research design. In this case, the experimental group was given a treatment using concept mapping and the control group was treated without using concept mapping. The population in this study was all the students of grade VIII of SMPN 13 Malang which are divided into eight classes. It consisted of 8A class until 8H class. The researcher selected the control group and the experimental group by using purposive sampling technique. The researcher used purposive sampling technique because the researcher chooses the sample of the study based on the classes which have similar low mean score in their middle test. As a result, 8B and 8C classes were chosen as the sample of this study. Then, the researcher determined which group belonged to experimental group and which group belonged to control group. From the average of middle test score, it was found that class 8B was 68.63 and class 8C was 67.21. The result was class 8C was lower than class 8B, so class 8C was chosen as experimental group, and 8B was chosen as control group. Based on the result of data analysis on the post-test the experimental and control groups, the studentsÂ’ achievement of the experimental group in paragraph writing was better than those in control group. This was because the mean score of the post test of the experimental group was 78.94 while the mean score of the control group 73.23. Based on the result of SPSS program, t-ratio of the post test was 4.296. By using the level significance of 0.05 and the degree of freedom of 83, the t-table value was 1.990. The data showed that the value of t-ratio was greater than t-table, so it is concluded that Ho (Null Hypothesis) was rejected and Hi (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted. Thus, the hypothesis stated that the students who are thought by using concept mapping show better achievement than without concept mapping is accepted. It means that using concept mapping affect the studentsÂ’ achievement in paragraph writing at SMPN 13 Malang is accepted.
