Abstract

English conversation extracurricular class (ECE) is used to improve and motivate the students to communicate in English fluently and creatively. It can motivate them to increase their speaking skill. The students who have high interest in extracurricular activities will have high motivation, to perform with the feeling of confidence. Every student has different factors that make him or her motivated in joining the extracurricular activities. Therefore, the researcher wants to investigate about (1) What are the factors that influence the students’ motivation to join ECE at SMAN 2 Batu and (2) What are the dominant motivation that make the students interest to join ECE at SMAN 2 Batu. In this study the researcher used descriptive quantitative method to obtain the information related to students’ motivation to join ECE and the most dominant motivation of students in joining ECE. And the population was the students who were joining English conversation class at SMAN 2 Batu. The researcher took all population as the sample. Meanwhile, the instrument used to get the data of this study was questionnaire. Based on the result, there were seven factors that made the students motivated in joining ECE. There were intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors. The researcher also found the most dominant motivation of students in joining ECE by using “Yes” answers of questionnaire. The most dominant motivation that make students interest to join ECE at SMAN 2 Batu was intrinsic motivation about 8,7. It can be concluded that the intrinsic motivation have the importance role for the students in joining English conversation extracurricular at SMAN 2 Batu.
