Abstract

Nowadays, reading was one of language skill that should be mastered by the students. Because by reading students can learned a foreign language and enriched thier knowledge. This research proposed a visual media as the new strategies in reading learning process. The aim of this research was to know whether the use of visual media can improve students' reading ability. This research was designed as Classroom Action Research to solve the problem occurring in the reading lesson. The population of this research was third grade of students at SMP Raden Fatah Batu which consisted of four classes A,B,C and D. The researcher used cluster sampling and simple random sampling. Cluster sampling technique is used because the students on the third year consisted of four parallel classes. To select one class among those classes, the researcher used simple random sampling. So that, the sample was taken IX-D that consisted of 28 students.The action research was conducted from date August to date October 2011. The researcher conducted two Cycles of action. The result of research in Cycle 1 showed that the average of Pre-Test was 58,04, and went down in the Post-Test to 54,42. So the decrease was about 3,62 point or 6,24%. It was different from Cycle 2, the result of Cycle 2 showed that the average of Pre-Test 54,42. It increased in the Pos-Test to 90.36. It showed an improvement than the result of Cycle 1. The progress between Pre-Test and Post-Test of Cycle 2 was about 35,94 point or 66,04%. It can be concluded that visual madia using narrative text with pictures can improved students' reading ability at ninth D in SMP Raden Fatah Batu. Based on those results, it can be concluded that students show positive response upon the use of the narrative text with pictures in reading lesson to improve students' reading ability, and this strategy is appropriate to improve students' reading ability.
