Abstract

Adjective is one of the most important parts of English grammar, it describes or modifies noun. Present and past participle adjectives are made from verbs. Many students are still confused in using present and past participle adjectives due to the two different types of participle mean completely different things. If the students are not carefull in using present or past participle adjectives, it will not express the intended meaning. Therefore, the students have to understand well the use of present and past participle adjectives in their sentence or conversation. Considering completely different meaning between present and past context, this study is intended to investigate the students' ability in using present and past participle adjectives at English Department of UMM. In this research, the writer used descriptive quantitative research design because it was objective measurement and statistical analysis of numeric data to understand and explain phenomena. This research purpose is to know how the students' ability in using present and past participle adjectives at English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. There were 50 students from the third semester who became the sample of this research. They were chosen by cluster sampling. The instrument of this research was 30 items of the test about fill in the blank. The result of this research tells that the mean score of the students was 63,46. It means that they had in average level of ability in using present and past participle adjectives. I concluded that three students (6.0%) got (80-100) or excellent (A), ten students (20.0%) got (75-80) or very good (B+), nine students (18.0%) got (70-74.9) or good (B), ten students (20.0%) got (60-69) or average (C+), three students (6.0%) got (55-59.9) or fair (C), thirteen students (26.0%) got (40-54.9) or poor (D), two students (4.0 %) got (<40.0) or very poor.
