Abstract

The learnerÂ’s success in learning English is mostly determined by their mastery of four language skills; reading, speaking, listening, and writing. One of the most important skills that should be mastered by the students is speaking. Speaking is complicated skill because it needs many elements to be simultaneously used at time. This study concerned with what the studentsÂ’ difficultiesin learning speaking in ESP program at University of Muhammadiyah Malang, their causes, and the ways to overcome the difficulties. This study used a survey research because the data was obtained from each difficulty in percentage. The population of this study was the first semester students ofTeacher Education and Elementary School Department (A, B, C, D, E, F class). There were 345 numbers of populations in this research, and the writer took 60 (20%) from the total number. The questionnaire and observation were used as the instruments to collect the data. The writer used structure questionnaire and non participation observation to answer the problems. From those data, the writer analyzed what difficulties were faced by students in learning speaking in ESP program, the causes, and solving difficulties. The result of this study showed that the students got some difficulties with their speaking ability, particularly in terms of inhibition (45%), nothing to say (46,7%), low or uneven participation (50%), mother tongue use (46,7%), and speech act (40%). Furthermore, they also faced the causes such as getting nervous, lack of vocabulary, lack of preparation, could not produce a sentence in the right English pattern, and confused with the assignment. The last, it described the ways to overcome the difficulties. The difficulty in inhibition was overcome by getting more exercise. When the students had nothing to say, they overcome by improving vocabularies and pronunciation skills. The low participation was overcome by the lecturer gave stimulus to make the students active in class. The difficulty in mother tongue was overcome by not using mother tongue in their communication. The difficulty in pronunciation was overcome by looking up the dictionary to check the spelling and phonetic symbols. The difficulty in grammar was overcome by studying grammar to improve their knowledge and trying to implement it in real communication. The last difficulty of vocabulary was overcome by studying to identify differences of using noun, verb, adjective, and adverb in sentences.
