Abstract

Speaking is a skill that enables us to produce utterances which involve expressing idea and opinions, expressing a wise or desire to do something, negotiating, and/or solve a particular problem or establishing and maintaining social relationship and friendship. Speaking is one of the most difficult aspects for students to master. A lot of components or factors involve in speaking, such as: how to expressing ideas, how to use grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation as well as listening to and reacting to the person to communicate. Therefore, the teacher should consider how to convey the material (technique) in teaching speaking. Technique is implementation of operational activities conducted by teacher in teaching base on approaching and method. Techniques of teaching speaking class are potential for student development because the use of techniques will influence studentsÂ’ understanding, studentsÂ’ activity and studentsÂ’ motivation. Therefore the study of the techniques of teaching speaking is important for the teacher who teaches speaking. In this study the writer uses descriptive qualitative approach to describe the phenomenon in speaking class. The writer uses the qualitative based on the purposes of study that observe the phenomenon of speaking class naturally and still consider the values that bound human behavior. The writer found many techniques that were used by teacher of speaking class in classroom activities, such as; discussion, small group, game, drill, watching movie, debate, and telling story. The teachers used techniques based on the studentsÂ’ need and interest. Moreover, there are problems that are faced by teacher in applying the techniques in teaching speaking, such as: students often used Bahasa Indonesia, need a long time to prepare the class, limited time in applying the technique, and the students had limited vocabulary.
