Abstract

Pharmaceutical service paradigm has been shifted from product oriented to patient oriented through pharmaceutical care. Accordingly, self medication or service without prescription is provided. The medicine often used for self medication is the one of NSAID (Non Steroid Anti Inflammation Drug) like diclofenac sodium. Meanwhile, the side effects of diclofenac sodium can be minimized by providing pharmaceutical services related to patient assessment and developing treatment plans that include drug and non-drug treatments. This study aimed at investigating the pharmaceutical care profile of diclofenac sodium self medication in the community pharmacy around Klojen, Malang. Hence, this study was conducted randomly in 38 community pharmacy in Klojen, Malang. The researcher employed simulated patient method in performing the scenarios and collecting the data related to patient assessment and the development of the drug and non-drug treatment plan variables. Further, the data were recorded on the check list and processed using Microsoft Excel. In regards to patient assessment, the study revealed the followings: the age of the patient (26%), the length of the knee pain (3%), and the medical history (8%). Indeed, regarding the drug treatment, the study revealed the followings: drug efficacy with directions (100%), side effects without directions (2%), side effects with directions (53%), wrong answers despite directed side effects (45%), and dosage with directions (100%). In addition, no pharmacists told information about non-drug treatment related to light exercise by slowly moving the knees and resting enough. Key words: pharmaceutical care, self medication, diclofenac sodium, simulated patient method
