Abstract

Some problems that researcher found in Class XI.1 UPW were (1) students were taught by conventional teaching method, teaching learning process was applied by using lecturing method with the use of textbooks as the only major source of learning that teachers used in the delivering the material. (2) When teacher asked questions related to the material, there were only one or two students who could answer correctly out of 22 students. (3) The majority of students did not like English Lesson. Some of students said that they must think about the word or sentence in Indonesian before translating into English. It caused their brain work harder in speaking English. (4) The results in final semester examination in the academic year 2012/2013 were 60 % out of 22 students had score above 7.0. It revealed that this class had yet met qualification. Minimal completeness criteria of English at SMK Batu Putikecwara are 70. And classical completeness criteria in English Subject at SMK Putikecwara Batu are 75%. (5) Students did not know the good way to get teacher’s attention. They tried to grab teacher’s attention through negative behaviors. They thought that the only way to get teacher’s attention was from making noise, disturbing their friend or breaking the rules of school (6) Teacher did not want to be blamed in spite of some students successfully identified teachers’ mistakes. Teacher claimed students are much younger than her, so that teachers’ knowledge was higher than them. These problems were the main factors which make students’ score were not reaching minimal completeness criteria. Based on some problems above, researcher formulated the statement of problem “How does Team Game Tournament Method improve students’ speaking achievement in Class XI.1 UPW at SMK Putikecwara Batu”. The purpose of the research is to describe the implementation of Team Game Tournament method to improve students’ achievement in Class XI.1 UPW at SMK Putikecwara Batu. Researcher used different strategies in both cycle one and cycle two to meet the qualification. The strategies in cycle one was researcher used three kinds of instruments such as keyword, statement question, and situation question. In keyword, researcher asked student to classify the words into four kinds of compliment (appearance, skill/talents, work accomplished, and possession). In statement question, researcher asked students to complete the dialogue by using compliment expression or its responses. And in situation question, teacher asked students to make a dialogue and demonstrate it in accordance with situation given. Meanwhile in team game tournament session, researcher applied card game. The description of the game was there were 20 written questions in a sheet. Each question had different portion of point. Each member in a group had to collect the point as many as possible by answering questions in a sheet based on the number in a card that had already been picked. Unfortunately, researcher still did not meet the qualification due to some weaknesses. The result was only 30 percent out of 22 students had met qualification 70. Those weaknesses were due to researcher using abstract media such as situation question. Researcher only explained the situation orally and asked student to make a dialogue based on the situation. Most of students were confused about how to start making a dialogue. Most of them were only silent. Next, the game tournament applied in cycle one did not support speaking skill. The game tournament was appropriate to measure students’ knowledge. Hence, researcher made improvement in cycle two. Some improvements were preparing concrete media and redesigning the game from only testing students’ knowledge to encouraging students’ speaking. In addition, researcher also participated in discussion aiming at giving attention and helping students who have difficulty in completing worksheet. During test, most of students seemed to fluently speak English. The result in cycle two was 84.21 percent out of 20 students had met qualification. This research can be concluded that researcher used two different strategies to meet qualification 70. The strategies in cycle one were using abstract media namely keyword, statement question, and situation question. Besides, researcher used game called as card game. These strategies failed because they were still abstract for students in which making students get confused about how to make sentence. In addition, the card game is not fit to encourage students’ speaking but it is fit to test students’ knowledge. Therefore, researcher made improvements by converting strategies in cycle two to meet qualification. The strategies in cycle two were using concrete media and using role playing game. These strategies were very successful. By those strategies, students could fluently speak English.
