Abstract

Facebook is one of the popular social networks for digital native. They use many new words to express their feeling. But, it is difficult to comprehend by digital immigrants. The purposes of this study are: 1) To know the comprehension of SMAN 1 Panggul Trenggalek teachers as digital immigrant toward language used by digital native’s Facebook status update; 2) To know the difficulties faced by the teachers of SMAN 1 Panggul Trenggalek to comprehend the language used by digital native Facebook status update; 3) To know the impacts of the language used by digital native Facebook status update toward teaching and learning process. The research design of this study was qualitative research because the researcher describes the digital immigrant’s comprehension toward language used by digital native’s Facebook status update and the data are collected in the form of words not in the form of numbers. The writer is the primary instrument to collect the data. The tools used by the researcher are; document and semi structure interview. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that SMAN 1 Panggul Trenggalek teachers as digital immigrant tend to have poor comprehension toward language used by digital native’s Facebook status update. It is because of these four difficulties; first, the digital natives create new word to make status update in Facebook. Second, the digital natives use shortens word. Third, the digital natives use uncommon language. The last, the language that used by digital natives broke the Official Indonesian Spelling System, EYD (Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan). Moreover, there were three negative impacts toward teaching and learning process; first, the digital native students accustomed to use that language in class and in their daily conversation. Second, corrupts the language order especially in EYD (Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan). Third, complicates the teacher in building the good characteristic of digital native. It is because; the language development of digital native is totally different with the digital immigrant era.
