Abstract

Language is used as a tool of communication in social interactions to communicate with others. The fact that language is universally changeable, and that it changes in different ways at different times and places, is of course the basic fact of historical linguistics. It means that there could be a new language which could change the way of communication based on time and place. Because of that, any society can create and use a new language to communicate. This underlies the jargon existence which can be created as the way of society to communicate and talk to each other. Jargon is a confused speech, resulting particularly from the mingling of several languages or dialects that signifies the special language of a group or profession the language of society. society cannot be separated in communication aspect, because if the society do not use language, there is no communication aspect. This study tries to explore the word formation processes of the jargon used in Clint Eastwood movie “A Million Dollar Baby”. The purposes of the study are to identify the word formation processes on the jargon found in the “A Million Dollar Baby” movie and to know the meanings of the jargon found in the movie. The research design used this study is descriptive qualitative as the research design because it is intended to describe the current phenomenon. This study use researcher as the research instrument and document analysis as the research instrument method. The subject of the study is the boxing jargon used in “A Million Dollar Baby”. There are 43 boxing jargons found in this study, some of which are: Hook, Split, Ropes, Beat, Card, Shoot, Toe, and Title. There are five word formation processes from nine processes in 43 boxing jargons found in “A Million Dollar Baby”, they are: coinage, borrowing, compounding, acronym, and blending. Based on the five word formation found in this study, borrowing is the most common word formations process in this study, because in this study there are 21 boxing jargon in “Million Dollar Baby Movie” are borrowed from another language.
