Abstract

Novel is one of literary works that reveals aspect of a deeper humanity and served with delicate. Novel as a work of fiction offers a world that contains an idealized model of life, which is about an imaginative world built through the intrinsic elements such as themes, events, plot, character, setting, and point of view. This analysis concerned with Mark Twain’s work, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In this research, the writer focused on Tom’s attitude towards punishment. The purposes of this study were to describe Tom Sawyer’s attitudes toward punishment in the novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain and to know the factors that influence the formation of Tom Sawyer’s attitude in the novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain. This research used descriptive qualitative because the design was used to describe and to find the main character’s attitude towards punishment found in the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Objective research approach was used in this study because the writer did not need to study about the author’s life, the background of the work, the background of the society, but it is only analyze the work itself. The object of this study was the novel itself including the paragraphs, dialogues, and quotation that were related to Tom’s attitude towards punishment on Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The result of this study showed that Tom’s attitude towards punishment were: (1) Avoiding the punishment (2) Giving the punishment to the others (3) Could explain nothing when he was punished by his teacher. The factors that influence Tom’s attitude were: (1) The factor that he avoids the punishment is the information that had been accepted by the individual (2) The factor that he gives the punishment to the others and he could explain nothing is the individual’s personality character.
