Abstract

Speaking is one of the most demanding language skills in globalization era. Many people use English as means of communication with others globally. Considering the demand of having a good oral communication, lecturers are required to enrich their understanding on how to master speaking in a various teaching method. Therefore, learning speaking through debating is appropriate to fulfill the demand of new reference in teaching speaking. The objective of this present study is to gain some information about teaching speaking through debate class specifically the kind of teaching method used and the implementation of the method in class. In this research, qualitative - narrative design is employed. The main focus of this research is the teaching speaking method that is used by the senior debate coach in teaching speaking in ILF (International Language Forum) debate class. The coach was selected by using non-random - purposive sampling. The data collection will be gained by using two kinds of research tools; they are observation and interview. In this present studies the observation conducted four times with one hour duration of video record, while the interview conducted once with several minutes duration of tape record. Further, the procedure data analysis in this study used several sequence of steps; they are organizing and familiarizing, coding and reducing and interpreting and representing. From this research, it is found that the methods used by the coach are; direct method and community language learning. Those methods are implemented with a systematic procedure of teaching steps; they are pre-activity, main activity and post activity. The implementation of methods and it steps are considerably applied well in class with an easy flow of teaching and learning process. Besides, the researcher also depicts the process of teaching speaking through debate that is used by the coach in class.
