Abstract

Method is one component of teaching learning process. It offers the teachers alternative to make the students better in their learning activities. Because of the method, the teacher will be able to transfer information, select the resources and define the roles of students more easily. In this research, the writter focuses on the teaching methods used by the English teacher in teaching speaking skill for the second grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu. The purposes of this study are to investigate: 1) the kinds of methods does the teacher used in teaching speaking at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu, 2) the teacher’s problems in using the methods of teaching speaking at SMA Muhammdiyah 3 Batu, and 3) the teacherÂ’s solution in using the methods in teaching speaking at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu. The research design used in this study was a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher selected one English teacher who taught in the second grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu as respondent because he is the only one English teacher in that school. Futhermore, the data of this research were obtained from the result of semi-structured interview and from the non-participant observation in classroom teaching learning activity. The result of this study showed that the English teacher of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu applied demonstration method, community language learning method and communicative language teaching in teaching speaking. In using those methods, he presented the topic systematically which consisted of pre-activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity. In using teaching methods, he faced some problems, such as getting the students to try to speak and the lack of facilities in that school. To solve those problems, he established the English club outside the classroom,gave the students vocabulary each meeting and used group work. To solve the second problem, he used real examples of materials to make the students interested in speaking.
