Abstract

Casual style is one of the language styles. It is the most informal style of languageis used by people who know each other well. Considering that we communicate each other in daily life, we are required to have a good understanding on knowing the language style in accordance withthe situation occurs. Therefore, the casual style is appropriate to be analyzed. The purpose of this study is to gain information oncasual styles used by Mary Bennett, one of the main characters in the novel “The Sweet Potato Queens”, and to the context where those styles are used. In this research, descriptive qualitative was employed. The object of this research was “The Sweet Potato Queens” novel written by Jill Conner Browne. The data of this research were analyzed using objective approach because the analysis was not concerned with understanding the author’s life. This research only focused on the analysis of its literary works. From this research, it was found that the casual styles were used by Mary Bennett to communicate with her close friends signed by using many incomplete sentences and slang words or phrases. The context where the casual styles were used by Mary Bennett was informal such as; in a restaurant where Mary Bennett haslunch together with friends, in a stadium to watch a sport competition, in Mary Bennett’s house to celebrate graduation, in Mary Bennett’s car to find Tammy’s house, in Tammy’s house to create their own club, and in Mary Bennett’s house to discuss about food for their clubs meeting.Those were supported by Mary Bennett’s behavior that indicated the informal situation such as;sniffed armpits, said something with chuckling, blew kisses and wave hands to another people on the way, and smoked a cigarette during conversation.
