Abstract

Twitter is popular media for digital native. For the digital native is more closely and intimate. But, it is difficult to comprehend for digital immigrant. The research was based on the fact that the digital native especially the teenagers usually used alay language in their daily conversation or writing status update on Twitter. The purpose of this study was to know the comprehension of SMPN 18 Malang teachers as digital immigrant toward language used by digital natives’ status update in Twitter. In conducting this study, the writer applied qualitative research as the research design because the writer would describe the digital immigrant’s comprehension toward language used by digital natives’ status update in Twitter and the data are collected in the form of words not in the form of numbers. The writer is acting as researcher as instrument to collect the data. Tolls used by the researcher are; document and semi structure interview because she had more freedom to make questions and could improve the questions. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that SMPN 18 Malang teachers as digital immigrant tend to have poor comprehension toward language used by digital natives’ status updates in Twitter. It is because of the following reasons; first the digital natives create new word to make status update in Twitter. Second, the digital natives makes status updates in Twitter by using shorten word. Third, the digital natives use uncommon language to make status update in Twitter. The last, about the grammatical pattern, the language that used by digital natives will influence even broke The Official Indonesia Spelling System, EYD (Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan).
