Abstract

In Indonesia, Kindegarten students have the opportunity to learn English as one of the local load subjects when necessary. Teaching English in Kindegarten seems to be in line with the assumption that learning at young age will gain a better result than at older age. Teaching English to young learners is not the same as that to the adult learners. However, the teacher needs to understand about learning strategies and teaching media that facilitate the teaching learning process. This study is focused on the describing the use of visual media in teaching English vocabulary to young learners of TK IT Al-Ma’un Sengkaling. The focus of the research were the kinds of visual media that were used by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary, the problems faced by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary in using the visual media, and the teacher’s way to solve the problems. In conducting this research, the writer used descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this research was the English teacher at the class A of TK IT Al-Ma'un Sengkaling. The instruments used by the researcher to collect the data were observation and interview. The result of the research showed that the English teacher at TK IT Al-Ma’un Sengkaling used five of visual media in teaching English vocabulary to young learners. They are whiteboard, stick cards, magic box and real objects. Those visual media were very effective and helpful for the teacher and the students. In implementing the visual media, the teacher faced some problems. The first problem was the lack of teacher’s ability in creating the visual media. It was overcome by joining some courses or training and had cooperation with other teachers and students in making visual media. The second problem was related to the time allotment in teaching vocabulary by using visual media. To overcome this problem, the teacher prepared the visual media related to the materials that would be taught in the next meeting.
