Abstract

Facebook is one of social network that a lot of people around the world use to keep relation and interaction each other. Today facebook not only used by teenager as digital native but also facebook used by old people as digital immigrants. Moreover the digital natives have characteristics that easy to accept the new transformation such as language, technology, social interaction, etc. In this study the researcher wants to know about the digital native’s perception towards the use of digital immigrant’s language in facebook status update. In this study researcher uses a qualitative approach because the study is to know perception of digital native, this is one of social phenomenon that was happening in society, so that is why this study is qualitative research. The method of this study is qualitative research and design of this study is a descriptive study. Merriam (1998) describe five types of qualitative research: generic, ethnographic, phenomenology, grounded theory and case studies. Generic refers to the discovery and understanding of a phenomenon, a process, perspective and view of people. In this research the researcher as the primary instrument, because the researcher who gathering and analyzing the data. A type of this study is generic because this studies to understand the phenomenon through asking perception of people. This research can also be seen as phenomenological because based on assumption of digital native toward the use of digital immigrant language updates status of facebook. The object research of this study is digital immigrants’ friends of the researcher which have the certain characteristics. The result of this study showed that the number of digital natives who have positive perception toward the use of digital immigrants language in facebook status update same as the number of digital natives who have negative perception. Some of digital natives said that the language use by digital immigrants is good, everyone can read and understand language used by digital immigrants in updating status in facebook because is it clear writing, without using abbreviation, shorten words and not alay language like language that is used by most of digital natives. Same of digital natives said that the use of digital immigrants’ language in facebook status updates is too formal and not suitable to apply in social network, too serious and boring status updates. Moreover digital natives say that old people and teenagers have difference language style. The digital immigrant and the digital native have a gap where some people can know who is an owner of a status update just see from the writing.
