Abstract

The complexity of writing often leads some students to make some errors in making written work. Writing is a thinking process in its own right and certainly needs a great intellectual effort which usually takes place a considerable period of time. Because writing is complex language skill, the error level in making written work is very high. To avoid some errors in making an essay, teacher should have technique to teach the students. The researcher just focuses on errors on the descriptive essay written by the sixth semester students at the English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang, because writing descriptive essay needs more concentration and it requires the student to combine their five senses to work together. Students should have the ability to write the condition of something, and it should be well organized, because they should make the reader not confused with their essay, and really imagine that thing to be described. This study used the descriptive qualitative research design because the researcher wanted to describe the errors and the most dominant errors found in the descriptive essay. The population taken for this study was the sixth semester students at English department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The total of the students were about 299 students and divided into A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K and L class. The samples of this study were 74 students. This study used the document analysis because the researcher got the data from the studentÂ’s composition. The writer took some steps to analyze the data namely identifying the error, classifying the error, and counting the percentage the error to get the most dominant error. From the data analysis, it was found that the students made 17 grammatical errors. The errors were 4 (2,4 %) of syntax and morphology, 2 (1,2 %) of omission, 2 (1,2 %) of additions, 3 (1,8 %) of misformation, and 6 (3,6 %) of misordering. Besides, the students also made 150 organizational errors. The errors were 58 (34,7 %) in writing introductory, 28 (16,8 %) in writing body, and 64 (38,3 %) in writing concluding paragraph. Therefore, the most dominant error done by the sixth semester students at English department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang was organizational error (89,8 %).
