Abstract

Literature is a personal expression of feeling including experience, idea, motivation, and confidence which are described by using language. Literary work includes a wide range of written materials such as: poem, play, prose fiction includes short story and novel. Novel is a story related to the human life, with its problems, characters, conflicts, and motivations. This study conducted on analyzed The Pearl written by John Steinbeck and focused on the main character’s motivation in saving the pearl. This study started with two statements of problem; those are what Kino’s motivations in saving the pearl in “The Pearl” novel by John Steinbeck are and what Kino’s efforts in saving the pearl in “The Pearl” novel by John Steinbeck are. This study used descriptive qualitative research design because the data used were in the form of words and there were no numbers at all so this method only attempts to present the information concerning the study of Kino’s motivation in The Pearl novel by John Steinbeck. The writer used objective approach to analyze the novel because she only analyzed the work of literature itself without paying attention to the author’s background of life, the age in which it was written, or its possible effects on the readers. The object of this study was The Pearl novel by John Steinbeck. The data were taken from quotation of paragraph and dialogs that were presented in the novel. The results of this study showed that there were two kinds of Kino’s motivations in saving the pearl. They were categorized in intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. In intrinsic motivation, Kino had a dream to be a rich man. In extrinsic motivation, Kino was motivated by his familyÂ’s condition. There were two efforts of Kino’s motivation in saving the pearl. They were (1) Kino’s effort in saving the pearl from Juana’s action, (2) Kino’s effort in saving the pearl from the trackers.
