Abstract

In English, reading subject is particularly difficult. A teacher often finds difficulty to lead the students to be active and enjoy learning reading subject. It is intensely essential to select a certain teaching method for reading skill because reading subject tends to make the students bored in the classroom. Make a Match method is one of cooperative learning methods that can help the teachers to avoid the students being bored in reading subject. Based on this consideration, the researcher wants to study about the effect of the implementation of Make a Match method on the students’ reading achievement at the third grade IPS class of SMA TAMANSISWA, Malang. In this study, the researcher used a quasi-experimental design (intact group comparison design). The group of subject was divided randomly by the researcher into two groups (experimental and control groups). Then, both groups got the same observation (test). So, the intact group comparison design was used because it was suitable with the researcher’s study. In addition, the researcher used the entire population; it was called a research population. In this study, the experimental group was treated using Make a Match method and the control group was treated using conventional method (lecturing method). Basically, in the conventional method, the teacher controls the instructional process, the content is delivered to the entire class and the teacher tends to emphasize factual knowledge. In other words, the teacher delivers the material and the students listen to the teacher. The population of this study was the third grade IPS class of SMA TAMANSISWA, Malang. Regardless of the specific type of sampling used, the researcher used target population in the study because the subject population had already in the place of study. Then, the researcher divided the population randomly into two groups. The data were obtained through pre test and post test in the form of multiple choice. It was taken from published book; Interlanguage: English for Senior High School Students XI Science and Social Study Programme (BSE) published by Departemen Pendidikan Nasional, English Module for even semester SMA/MA XI published by Tim Edukatif HTS, and Wonderful World Grade XI for SMA/MA students (MGMP) published by Dinas Pendidikan Kota Malang. Then, the test was analyzed using independent sample t-test. The result of statistical analysis using independent sample t-test showed that the empirical t (te) value 2.857 was higher than theoretical t value (tt) 2.060 in the level of significance of 5% and t value (tt) 2.787 in the level of significance 1% with the degrees of freedom (df) 25. Hence, the hypothesis stated that the use of Make a Match method in improving the students’ reading achievement was accepted. It means that the use Make a Match method significantly improved the students’ reading achievement.
