Abstract

Learning English is divided into four abilities (skills) or aspects, namely the ability of listening, speaking, writing, and reading. One of the objectives of teaching English is to make the learners able to communicate using the language in the form of oral and written communication. One of the objectives of teaching foreign language is to provide the students with skills which enable them to communicate orally with the speakers of other nationality who have also learned the language. This research was conducted to find out whether demonstration method can improve the student ability in speaking in XII TKJ 3 (Technology Computer and Network) SMKN 3 Malang. This study belonged to experimental research since its objective was to know whether or not Demonstration Method was effective in improving students’ speaking ability in procedure text. More specifically, in this study the researcher used a quasi experimental design. The population of this research was the third year students of TKJ 3 (Technology Computer and Network) of SMK Negeri 3 Malang. It contained 3 classes, class XII TKJ 1 (Technology Computer and Network) consisted of 31 students, class XII TKJ 2 (Technology Computer and Network ) consisted of 32 students , and XII TKJ 3 (Technology Computer and Network ) consisted of 32 students. Therefore the total number of the population was 95 students. The selected classes were class XII TKJ 2 (Technology Computer and Network) and XII TKJ 3. Then, class XII TKJ 3 (Technology Computer and Network) was given treatment as the experimental group because it had the lowest means score among other classes. While, class XII TKJ 2 as the control group that did not receive the treatment. The result of study, Based on the result of ANOVA, it was found out that F-Ratio was 4,312055 and then, to test hypothesis, the value of F-Table was needed. By considering the level of significance of 0.05 and the degree of freedom of 60, then F-table value was found to be 1,00. The data showed that the value of F-Ratio was greater than that of T-Table. Therefore, the hypothesis stating that using demonstration method improves the student’s speaking ability was accepted. This means that using Demonstration Method significantly improve the student’s speaking ability in procedure text. The success of using demonstration method in this study could be caused by the fact that there was a good communication in front of class by demonstrating procedure text using the real objects. All of the students present their product in front of class. It made students know the process, the steps and it help each others to understand procedure text.
