Abstract

Today, the world requires that the goal of teaching speaking should improve students' communicative skills, because, only in that way, students can express themselves and learn how to follow the social and cultural rules appropriate in each communicative circumstance. By using the media, it can help the English teacher and students in teaching and learning process. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The research subject of this study was the English teacher at SMAN 02 Batu, Malang. The objectives of this study are to find the kinds of media the teacher use in teaching speaking, the problems the teacher face in teaching speaking and the way the teacher solves the problems in using media in teaching speaking. As the result of this study, it was found that the teacher uses two kinds of media, they are audio media and visual media. In using audio media, the teacher uses a tape recorder in delivering the material such as conversation. She also uses LCD and the blackboard as her viusal media. Unfortuantately, the teacher has some problems in using the media such as the number of students in a class are too big for speaking; there are about 30 students, time allotment, and the media sometimes do not work properly. To solve the number of students` problem, the teacher designs the students in a small class which contained not more than 20 students. As the result, teaching and learning process more comfortable. To solve the time allotment and the defective media, the teacher asks the staffs to fix them.
