Abstract

Facebook is one of social networking that helps every people to communicate more efficient and easy with their family and their friends. Not only Digital native but also digital immigrant have and use it. But in using this social media, there is a difference between digital native and immigrant, especially on their language used. Digital native usually use their alay language. Therefore, this research focus on digital immigrant perception towards language of digital natives’ status updates on facebook. The aim of this research is to investigate the digital immigrants’ perception toward the language of digital natives’ status updates on facebook. The research design employed was qualitative research because it’s aimed at exploring and understanding perception of the digital immigrants’ perception toward the language of digital natives’ status updates on facebook. The primary instrument of this research is researcher herself. Tool that was used to conduct this research was document, beside interview as a technique. The subject of this research were the English department lecturers at University of Muhammadiyah Malang who were digital immigrant or born before 1980. The result of this research showed that digital immigrants tend to have positive perception towards language of digital natives’ status updates on facebook. It was said as positive perception because the characteristics of the perception that are given are the support and approval with the language of digital natives’ status updates on facebook.
