Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the student’s activities in learning speaking skill at Jama’ah Coffeeiyah (JC) English study club. It is based on the fact that activity is taking an important role in facilitating speaking skill. It is because speaking as skill will only develop with a certain practice, and practice is the activity through which language skill and knowledge are consolidated and thoroughly mastered. In short, speaking as skill is promoted through a certain practice that is implemented by various activities. The purposes of this research are formulated as follows; (1) to investigate the speaking activities applied at (JC) study club, (2) to describe the implementation of speaking activities applied at (JC) study club, and (3) to explain the advantages and the disadvantages of the speaking activities at (JC) study club. This is a descriptive research by using qualitative approach. The subject of this research is (JC) study club members. The researcher chose them since they have good English learning environment and activities to develop the four basic language skills that focus on speaking skill. This research used two kinds of research data gathering techniques they are; observation and interview, and two kinds of research instruments they are; observation check list and interview guide. The results of this research showed that the activities applied in the community were; discussion activity, picture describing activity, and FYI (for your information) activity. The implementation of discussion activity was initiated by working on a given topic, and then moved to present it to the audience, and then agree/ disagree activities applied, and then ended by conclusion. The implementation of picture describing was initiated by showing a picture, and then moved to introduce the topic through the picture, and ended by interactive reciprocal interaction between presenter and audiences. The implementation of FYI activity was initiated by self-initiation by telling the audience a new informational trend, news, or environment. The advantages of discussion activity were; foster critical thinking, quick decision making, and expressing an idea. The disadvantage of discussion activity was hard to use and express the idea. The advantages of picture describing were; foster public speaking and foster imagination. The disadvantage of picture describing was they need to bring other medium to present. The advantage of FYI activity was expressing an idea, while the disadvantage of FYI was hard to discuss without any concept.
