Abstract

There were many ways to teach vocabulary. One of them was using guessing game. Guessing game can be used in teaching and learning activity in order to make the students interested and enjoyable in learning English. The teacher used the guessing game in teaching to motivate the students in learning activity, especially in learning vocabulary. Vocabulary was one of important factors in language learning and developed the language skills. Therefore, the teacher should use technique that was able to raise the motivation of students. One of the technique teaching vocabularies was guessing game. The purpose of this study was to know the influence of guessing game technique toward the students’ English vocabulary. This study used an experimental research design because it was intended to know whether teaching vocabulary by using guessing game can improve students’ vocabulary ability. The subject of this study was fifth year students of elementary school at SDN Guluk-Guluk I Sumenep. A half of the students as an experimental group by using guessing game, and the other half as control group. The instrument of this study was vocabulary test. The type of vocabulary test was multiple choice. This study was focused on investigating whether or not guessing game improves the students’ vocabulary ability. Therefore, to find out whether or not there was difference between experimental and control groups in the case of vocabulary ability, t-test formula was used. The result showed that guessing game improved the students’ vocabulary ability. It could be seen from the data that t-value of te 3,359 was greater than the value of tt 2,048 on the degree of significance 0.05 and 2,763 on the degree of significance 0.01. It means that alternative hypothesis stated guessing game improves students’ vocabulary ability is accepted.
