Abstract

In a phrase or sentence, there are words which combine to each other that convey more meaning of the words themselves. The combination of those words can produce various structural meaning. In order to analyze the structural meaning, it can be analyzed in syntactic structures. Syntactic structures are parts of linguistics that focus on analyzing the structures of words in phrase or sentence. There are four kinds of syntactic structures. Those are: structure of modification, structure of predication, structure of complementation and structure of coordination. The purpose of this study was to know the kinds and most predominant syntactic structure in the rap songs “No Love” and “Talkin to Myself” by Eminem. The research design which was used in this study was descriptive qualitative research. The object of the study was the lyrics in the rap songs “No Love” and “Talkin to Myself” by Eminem. The rap songs were selected as the objects of the study because the lyrics of rap songs often used long lyrics that contained many words. The writer used document as the instrument. The data were the lines of the lyrics which were sung by Eminem. In data analysis, the writer used “Chinese Boxes” based on Francis’s theory. The finding of this study was divided into two. The first was the kinds of syntactic structures in the rap songs “No Love” and “Talkin to Myself” by Eminem. The writer found all four kinds of syntactic structures; structures of modification, structures of predication, structures of complementation, and structures of coordination. The second was the most predominant syntactic structure in those songs. The structure of modification appeared as the most predominant syntactic structure in both songs; in “No Love” song was 57.41%, and in “Talkin to Myself” song was 58.77%. In conclusion, all four kinds of syntactic structures were found in those songs and the structure of modification appeared as the most predominant syntactic structure in those both songs.
