Abstract

This research aimed at investigating the errors in learning conditional sentences made by the second year students at MAN 1 Malang. This research tried to find the errors, the frequency of each type of errors, and the causes of the errors made by students in learning conditional sentences. This research was conducted based on the fact that there were many errors in learning conditional sentencesmade by the second year students in the second semester. This research used a mix-method research design. The population of this research was the second year students at MAN 1 Malang that consist of nine classes. This research used stratified random sampling and purposive sampling to collect the data. The research instruments used weretest and checklist. These research findings showed that there were 246total errors. They were divided into four types of errors:misformation, 178 errors (72.36%); followed by omission, 50 errors (20.32 %); addition, 17 errors (6.91%); and misordering 1 error (0.41%). From the result, misformation error was the most dominant errors in learning conditional sentences made by the second year students at MAN 1 Malang. These errors were caused by some factors. The most dominant factor was intralingual transfer (33.3%), followed by context of learning (26.7%), interlingual transfer (23.3%), and the last was communication strategy (16.7%).
