Abstract

Nowdays, the use of code switching has already been very common. It can be found in magazines, host utterances, songs, teachers’ communication in teaching, novels and movies.People who have to known about code switching will get the examples of code switching directly. Whereas, for people who havenot known about code switching may tempt to learn about code switching more deeply. This study aimed to analyze code switching in the film Love in Perth directed by FindoPurwono HW. This study was intended to find the kinds of code switching and the characters’ reasons in using code switchings in Love in Perth film. This study used a descriptive qualitative design to gather the research data. The instrument of this study was the writer herself. Here, the primarysource of data was the Love in Perth film directed by Findo Purwono HW. The result of this study showed that, firstly, the writer found 49 code switchings usedby the characters in Love in Perth film. Secondly, she foundthree kinds of code switching used in this film,namely: 1) intra-sentential switching (22 sentences)as the most dominant code switching used in the film; 2) emblematic switching (19 sentences); and 3) inter-sentential switching (8 sentences). Furthermore,there were six reasons why the characters used code switching in this film, namely: 1) softening or strengthening requests or commands (24 sentences); 2) talking about a particular topic (16 sentences); 3) showing empathy about something (3 sentences); 4) because of real lexical need (4 sentences); 5) interjections (2 sentences); and 6) repetition used for clarification (1 sentence). The most dominant reason in using code switching in Love in Perth film was softening or strengthening requests or commands.
