Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the errors in applying simple past tense in writing narrative text made by the second year students at SMAN 2 Batu.This research tried to find the errors found in this research, the frequency of each type of errors, and the causes of errors made by students in writing narrative text. This research is conducted based on the fact that there were many errors in writing narrative text especially in applying simple past tense made by the second year students at SMAN 2 Batu. This research used qualitative research. The subject of this research was the second year students at SMAN 2 Batu that consist of eight classes. In this study, the researcher chose class XI IPS 3 which consisted of 30 students.The research instrument used wastest, checklist and interview. These research findings showed,that there were 91 total errors. They were divided into four types of errors: misformation 67 errors (70.53%); followed by omission, 12 errors (12.63%); addition 10 errors (10.53%); and misordering, 6 errors (6.31%). From the result, misformation error is the most dominant errors in writing narrative text made by the second year students at SMAN 2 Batu. There were four causes of errors in the use of the simple past tense. They were the context of learning, the intralingual transfer, the communication strategies and the interlingual transfer. Among these causes of errors, the context of learning was the most dominant.
