Abstract

The mastery of vocabulary becomes very essential in supporting a foreign language skill. In other side, teaching English vocabulary as foreign language classroom is not easy thing to do, because there are many various meanings, words form, and also word choices. Therefore, English teachers are expected to able to create some exercises and activities for the students in order to increase the students’ vocabulary. Translation can help in vocabulary acquisition (O’Malley et al.’s in Posen Liao: 2006). This research employed a classroom action research design with the aim to improve the students’ vocabulary using translation strategy. The research was carried out from 01 of May until 15 of May 2013. It was carried out in one cycle. Its’ cycle consisted of three meetings. The cycle of the research consisted of four steps: planning the action, implementing/acting, observing the action, and reflecting. This study employed collaborative research in which the researcher acted as the teacher who conducted the teaching and learning activity while the collaborator acted as the observer who observed the teacher’s performance and the students’ activity during the teaching and learning process. The subject of this research was the students of Class XC MAN 1 Malang. It involved 33 students in the academic year 2012/2013. There were three major steps in implementing translation as a teaching strategy: (1) Building knowledge of translation, (2) Practicing translation, The students were translating English text into Indonesian, and (3) Discussion, The students were analyzing, transferring, and restructuring the text in group. The finding of the research showed that the students’ vocabulary achievement in the preliminary study was low and there was not any student could pass Minimal Achievement Criterion (KKM, 70) with the mean score 23.03. After the implementation of the strategy in one cycle, the data showed that there were some improvements with the mean score 40, but there was not any student who obtained the vocabulary achievement score higher than 70. So, the vocabulary achievement of XC students using translation as a strategy is not significantly better than the students’ vocabulary in preliminary study.
