Abstract

Peer Review technique is a technique that is designed to help someone become a better writer. There is an interactive process of reading, commenting, and making suggestions on others’ writing for improvement. It has the advantage for students in writing process. The students will work collaboratively while writing process, so they will get something which can help them in their writing development. However, if the students do not work well together and they do not focus on the task, they will not get useful feedback, because the success of peer review depends on who the reviewer is and whose work is being reviewed. Therefore, the objective of this study is to know whether peer review technique improves the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph at second grade in SMP Negeri 2 Purwoasri or not. In this study, the researcher used quasi-experimental research design. Quasi-experimental design is the design that used where it is impossible to random subjects, because it does not provide full control. In this case, the experimental group was given a treatment using peer review technique and control group was treated without using peer review technique. The population of this study was the second grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Purwoasri. There are five classes of the second class, but the researcher chose two classes as the sample, they were VIII-A as a control class which consists of 25 students and VIII-B as an experimental class which consists of 25 students. The data were obtained through a test. The data of this study were analyzed using SPSS version 16 for windows. Based on Independent Samples Test, Ho is accepted which means that peer review technique does not improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. There were some possibilities which caused peer review technique could not improve the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. First is they did not know how to do the peer editing and self-editing, although the teacher guided them. Second, they had not experience about it before, so they were confused. Third, the students did not work well together, and they did not focus on the task, so they did not get feedback to their improvement on writing subject. Fourth is the students were in low level, because they were in Junior High School so their English proficiency is less. Fifth, the limited number of treatment that was only 4 meetings, it must be around 8-16 meetings for conducting a treatment.
