Abstract
Question is used to give a direction and initiate instruction to evaluate students understanding in teaching and learning process. By questions, the teacher can determine whether or not the students understand of the subject by indicating in students’ responses. Therefore, the teacher needs to know the type of questions, level of thinking, and students’ responses in order to develop teachers’ understanding when the teacher gives question using English as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning process. Based on the important of questions using English as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning process, the researcher conducted this research. The purposes of this study were: (1) To find out the teachers questions used by the Math teachers, (2) To investigate the type of questions used by Math teachers, (3) To describe the students’ response toward the Math teachers’ questions. This study used qualitative research design. Then, the subjects of this study were five teachers who taught Math at first till fifth grade of SD Muhammadiyah 04 Batu who used English as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning process and students who gave silence response toward Math teachers’ questions.The researcher used two instruments namely non participant observation and unstructured interview. The result of this study showed that there were 100 Math teachers’ questions. All of them include to the lower level questions type which is consisting of knowledge and comprehension level of thinking. 91 questions refer to the knowledge level of thinking while 9 questions refer to the comprehension level of thinking. Besides, toward the Math teachers’ questions, the students gave responses. It was found three kinds of students’ responses namely choral, non-verbal, and silence. 90 students’ responses were referring to choral, 8 students’ responses were non-verbal and 2 students’ responses were silence. This show that the Math teachers used English as a medium of instruction in teaching and learning process which was dominant used lower level questions and choral for students’ responses.
