Abstract

Language is a system of sound used by human being to interact and communicate with others. As the tool for communicating and interacting, language has a meaning that can convey human feeling, ideas, thinking, emotion, etc. Jargon is the language peculiar to a trade, profession or other groups; it is the language used in a body of spoken or written texts, dealing with a circumscribed domain in which speakers share a common specialized vocabulary, habits of word usage, and forms of expression. In this study, the writer investigates the jargons used by Bandaran fishermen in Pamekasan. The writer is interested to investigate it because Bandaran fishermen is the fishermen community in Bandaran who use jargons in their own community. The purpose of this research is to know the jargons used by Bandaran fishermen, to analyze jargons, and to identify the type of technical word processes of Bandaran fishermen jargon. In this study, the writer used a descriptive qualitative research design. It was used to describe and interpret the jargons used by Bandaran fishermen, the meaning, and the types of technical word processes. The subjects of this study were 6 fishermen. The data were collected by observing and interviewing the informants of Bandaran fishermen. The result of this study showed that there were 61 jargons commonly used by Bandaran fishermen. Bandaran fishermen usually used the jargons in their conversation especially in sailing. They created jargon from compounding, borrowing, acronym and several words that become the new word formation. They use those jargons through invention to cover something with other people outside the member of group. By using the jargons in sailing they can be closer each other, because jargon is not used and often not understood by the speech community as a whole, that is why by using it in sailing every member can show their existence in community. There were three types of technical jargon processes such as, three borrowing, seven compounding, four abbreviation and forty seven of jargons become the new word formation processes.
