Abstract

Vocabulary is important to be mastered by the learners, since it is very essential for childrens’ acquisition process as young learners. We are expected to learn vocabulary earlier. But, the teacher certainly has many difficulties in teaching English vocabulary, especially if the teachers teach for young learners. This study was focused on the difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary at SPS Cahaya Bunda Malang. The research problems were the difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary, and the teacher’s ways to solve the difficulties. This study used descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this study is one teacher who taught one class kindergarten, that is B class at SPS Cahaya Bunda Malang. The instruments used by the writer to collect the data were observation and interview. The result of this study indicated that 1) the difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary at SPS Cahaya Bunda Malang were: a) Limited teaching media; the media used was not complete and the whiteboard was too small. b) The teacher’s teaching technique ineffective; the teacher always turn on the same song, the teacher writes the texts of songs’ lyric too small, the picture used to plays games too small, and the teacher was difficult to move the flashcard to another. c) Evaluating students’ achievements; the teacher was difficult to get the students’ scores, because the students were difficult to do the work. 2) The teacher’s ways to solve the difficulties. a) Limited teaching media; by using real object and picture, copying materials to the students. b) The teacher’s teaching technique ineffective; the teacher creates her own song or searches from the internet and copying the songsÂ’ lyric makes the picture bigger than before and taped on the wall, the teacher must practice more how to move flashcard before teaching learning process. c) Evaluating students’ achievements; the teacher asked another teacher to accompany her in the classroom.
