Abstract

Teaching English to young learners is different from teaching English to adults, because in teaching young learners, the teacher not only should have unique method that appropriate with the students but also should apply appropriate language that can be understood easily by the young learners. The appropriate language in teaching young learners is classroom language. Classroom language is a kind of simple English that is used to communicate in the class with the children to make them know English trough oral communication. The writer conducted this study because classroom language is a need for young learners’ teacher in order to introduce simple language which is very common in daily life such as “good morning” and “silent please”. In this study, the writer used descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this study were 18 pre-service teachers who taught the first grade grade of EYL course in English Department at UMM academic year 2012-2013, the class name was Brilliant. The instruments used to collect the data were participant as observer and interview. The objective of this study is to find classroom languages, kinds of classroom language and to describe the reasons of the first grade pre-service teachers in applying classroom language in EYL course at UMM. Based on the results of data analysis, the writer found that the first grade grade pre-service teachers applied fifty seven classroom languages and two kinds of classroom language in EYL course at UMM. Two kinds of classroom language were applied by pre-service teacher were classroom instruction and language of social interaction. Furthermore, there were five pre-service teachers’ reasons in applying classroom language, those were helping the students to understand simple language, introducing the English, accustoming the students with English, improving the students’ English ability, and giving stimulation to the students.
