Abstract

Learning strategy in acceleration students is made to help acceleration students who have special ability and intelligences in acquiring, storing and expressing content with the time shorter than regular students especially in learning English. The acceleration have own consideration to choose the appropriate learning strategy. It depends on several factors. The purposes of this study were (1) To describe learning strategies used by the tenth grade acceleration students (2) To explain the learning strategy dominantly used by tenth grade acceleration students (3) To describe the factors which affect the tenth grade acceleration students in choosing learning strategy in learning English at SMAN 1 Purwosari. This research used qualitative research because the collected data described the social phenomena of learning strategies employed by acceleration students and the factors affecting in choosing learning strategy. The subjects were the tenth grade acceleration students at SMAN 1 Purwosari in the academic year 2012-2013. This subject consisted of 19 students. They were given two close-ended questionnaires about learning strategies and factors affecting in choosing learning strategy. The findings showed that the acceleration students employed three learning strategies. They were Metacognitive strategy, Cognitive strategy and Socio-affective strategy. From those learning strategies, Socio-affective became the most dominant learning strategy. It got 69 (37%) “Yes” answers. Two main factors affecting were Internal factors: Age, Personality, Language aptitude, Intrinsic motivation, Attitudes, and Intelligences and External factor: Education, Culture, Learning styles, Extrinsic motivation, and Technology. From those findings, intrinsic motivation became the most choice of acceleration students. It got 54 (13%) “Yes” answers. In short, Socio-affective strategy becomes a precise way in English learning process. Furthermore, the intrinsic motivation has important role for raising an attractive and competitive English learning process in tenth grade acceleration students at SMAN 1 Purwosari.
