Abstract

Teaching English to young learners is very different from teaching English to adult learners. Young learners have their own characteristics. Thus, the teacher should be more skillful and creative in teaching young learners. Besides, teaching English in the early age is very important to develop their ability in learning a language. One of the tools which can develop young learners’ ability in learning a language, especially foreign language, is classroom language. In using classroom language, the teachers should used as simple as possible. Because classroom language has an important role to develop young learners’ ability, the writer interests to conduct a study about it. The purposes of this study were (1) to find out the classroom languages used by 4th grade pre-service teachers in teaching EYL course of English Department at UMM; (2) to find out the kinds of classroom language used by 4th grade pre-service teachers in teaching EYL course of English Department at UMM; (3) to find out the pre-service teachers’ reasons in using classroom languages in teaching EYL course of English Department at UMM academic year 2012-2013. The design of this study was descriptive-qualitative research. The subject of this study was the 4th grade pre-service teachers of EYL course academic year 2012-2013. There were 19 pre-service teachers of 4th grade class. To collect the data, the writer used participant observation because the writer participated actively as one of the pre-service teachers in 4th grade class. The writer conducted the observations in 7 meetings. Besides, the writer also used semi-structured interview in order to collect the data of the pre-service teachersÂ’ reasons in using classroom language. Moreover, after the data gathered, the writer analyzed it by identifying, classifying, interpreting, and confirming it with the literary study. Based on the research findings, the writer found that the teachers used classroom languages, such as: classroom instruction, language of spontaneous situations and classroom interaction. Besides, the pre-service teachers applied those classroom languages as simple as possible. The pre-service teachers used those kinds of classroom language in order to make the students easily to develop their language.
