Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the slang used by the chatters found in The Sports Rejects in “Paltalk Chat”. These research purposes were: 1) to find out slangs in “The Sports Rejects” in Paltalk Chat. 2) to describe meaning of the slang found in “The Sports Rejects” in Paltalk Chat. 3) to describe the categories of slang found in “The Sports Rejects” in Paltalk Chat. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The accessible object of the study was chatting that used slang found in “Paltalk Chat” room: sport and hobbies; American’s football; The Sports Rejects from sites www.paltalk.com. Furthermore, the instrument used non-participant observation because the observer was not active or doing contact with the chatters and documentation was taken from chatting as the material analysis. Based on the data collection, there are 39 slangs used by the chatters found in The Sports Reject in “Paltalk Chat”. Then, the researcher found two categories of slang. There are regular vocabulary used in specific ways and regular vocabulary word. 14 slangs found in The Sport Rejects were included into Regular vocabulary used in specific ways. Other 25 slangs found in The Sports Rejects were included into Regular vocabulary word. From the result of the study, the researcher concluded that the chatters most frequently used regular vocabulary words. The researcher hoped that the result of this study can be used as one of the references especially for the lectures who teach sociolinguistics and it can be used as an additional material in teaching slang. The researcher also hoped that the further writer continue this research in more detail by specification of slang so the result will be broader.
