Abstract

Literature is meaningful because from literature people are able to see the world from other perspective. Literature is a kind of reflection from people’s life and it tells people how to face a certain problem that may appear based on the author’s eyes. Through literature, the readers are able to know about the problem and the struggle faced by the other person. This study was conducted to analyze parenting style of the main character in the “The Last Song” novel. The analysis was focused on Steve’s parenting style to her daughter, Ronnie. The research problems were the kinds of Steve’s parenting style, the reasons of Steve’s parenting style and the effects of Steve’s parenting style. In analyzing the data, this research used descriptive qualitative because it focused on understanding and interpreting the story in the novel instead of counting the statistic data. The technique of this research was library research because most of the information was taken from books, research journal and articles as the source of analysis. The approach used was objective research because the writer studied the novel written by the author without concerning the life background of the author. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there were two kinds of parenting style done by Steve, they were authoritative parenting style and permissive parenting style. There were two reasons in choosing parenting styles. First, Steve applied parenting style based on Ronnie’s characteristic. Second, Steve had short time to live because of his deadly disease. The effects of Steve’s parenting style to Ronnie were: 1) She wanted to have breakfast with her dad, 2) kissed him before she slept, 3) Gave him a hug, prepare the dinner together, and 4) Forgave his fault that left the family and took care of him patiently.
