Abstract

Successful listening can be looked at the terms of the strategies the listener uses when listening. Strategies can be thought of as the ways in which a learner approaches and manages a task, and managing their listening. The purposes of study are to know (1) the strategies used in teaching listening; (2) the problems faced in applying the strategies in teaching listening; and (3) the way the English teacher solves the problems in using the strategies to teach listening to the first year students of SMKN 3 Malang. The research design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The data of the research were collected from the observation which it used non-participant observation in the class, especially, of the first grade Busana or Clothing Boutique (X BS I), the first grade Kecantikan or Beauty Skin (X KCK), and the first grade Teknik Komputer dan Jaringan or Computer and Network Engineering (X TKJ III). While, the interview which it used unstructured interview with the English teacher. The result of this study showed that the teacher used the top-down strategy and bottom-up strategy in teaching listening. The top-down strategy covered listening for main idea, predicting, drawing inferences, and summarizing. While, bottom-up strategy covered recognizing word order-pattern. Furthermore, in applying the strategies the teacher faced some problems such as the students felt difficult to understand the native speakersÂ’ pronunciation through a cassette; the students could not focus their attention; and the classroom atmosphere was noisy. Finally, in order to make the process of teaching listening successful, the teacher used some ways to solve her problems. In this case, the teacher decided to use her own speech instead of that from cassettes in teaching listening because it made the students comprehend the subject material better and did their assignments more effectively. In addition, the teacher used English language that could be understood by the students when she was teaching listening in the classroom.
