Abstract

As human being people cannot avoid using language to communicate with others in their daily life. People use language to avoid misunderstanding and miscommunication. There are lots of language existing in the world, each of them has their own chatacteristic. By those existing languages, people are managed to mix them in order to communicate. The term of putting two languages in one utterance is also known as code mixing. In this research, the researcher intends to find out the kinds and contexts of code mixing found in Twivortiare novel by Ika Natassa. Furthermore, the researcher also wants to find out the writerÂ’s reason in using code mixing on her novels. This research is using qualitative method, because the data are in the form of description. The data are collected from the tweets and direct messages (DM) of the characters in the novel. In this research, the researcher using expressive approach. Data analysis of this study is identifying and classifying the code mixing found in the novel, and interviewing the writer via e-mail in order to get the data. There are three kinds of code mixing found in this novel. They are code mixing in form of word, phrase, and clause. Furthermore, there are seven contexts of code mixing found in this novel. They are topic, quoted opinion, emphatic about something, interjection, expressing group identity, real lexical need, and softening or strengthening command. The writer uses code mixing because of her habit in mixing the languages. The writer spends several years living in U.S.A and Australia for study and apprenticeship.
