Abstract

Nowsdays most people spend their time and get pleasure by reading a literary work. They assume that literary work is really enjoyable and comforting; however, it is hard to understand. Actually, the purposes of reading literary works are to increase an insight and new experience for the reader about value, culture, language, and knowledge. Literary work is a branch of literature. According to Merriam Webster's (1995:686), "Literature is writings in prose or verse; expecially, writings having excellence of from or expression and presenting ideas of permanent or universal interest". Therefore literature is an imaginative words that express the feelings and experiences of human aspect. Reading literature is really enjoyable, comforting but not easy to understand because the concepts of the content is packed by an imaginative words. Then reading literature needs a long time to understand the meaning. Moreover, the author provides human problems and solution. The purpose is to increase an insight and new experience for the reader. There are many kinds of literature. One of them is prose. Prose is the work of the author's imagination, which contains about life experiences or interesting things that sometimes it is difficult to predict. There are some important things to study a prose, they are reading the whole story and also undesrtand about the elements of the novel such as plot, setting, theme, character, point of view and conflicts in order to know what the author tells about. In this thesis the writer focuses on analyzing a novel. Therefore, the writer chose the novel "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" because of two reasons. The first reason is that novel is a blockbuster bestseller in 2005 for children and adolescent. The second is the author's success in making the fiction story a real life story. Rick Riordan as the author describes about the Greek God mythology in modern way. He used his own version about the Greek Gods mythology. He described the main character, Percy, as a demigod. Demigod is a child of the God and a human being. And, Percy is the child of Poseidon and a human being. The story began with the misunderstanding between Zeus and Poseidon. Zeus accused Poseidon to have stolen the lightning bolt and gave it to Percy. The lightning bolt was the symbol of Zeus's power. Then Zeus asked that Poseidon return the bolt by the summer solstice. Therefore Zeus always disturbed Percy wherever he was. Because of it, Percy had problems in his life which made him angry. Therefore, in this thesis the writer examined Percy Jackson's anger because of the problems which involved him. Anger is an act done by a person because of being hurt, oppressed and under pressure. Based on the explanation above, the writer focused on Percy Jackson's anger. It is supported by the fact that there are a lot of conflicts that are influenced by the anger in this novel. So this study is entitled An Analysis of Percy Jackson's Anger in Rick Riordan's Novel "Percy Jackson & the Olympians : The Lightning Thief"
