Abstract

English becomes one of the main subjects in elementary school, which is taught from the first grade up to the sixth grade. There are many teaching methods can be applied in teaching English to Young Learners in elementary school. The teacher has a big job to determine the best teaching method used in each class to make the students understand the material more easily. In this research, the researcher implemented demonstration method to teach English to Young Learners. The researcher wants to know whether or not the implementation of demonstration method has significant effect on studentsÂ’ English ability at the 4th grade of SDN Sumberrejo 02 Malang. The researcher used quasi-experimental research design. Specifically, the researcher used nonrandomized control group, pretest–posttest design. The experimental group which has 26 students was given the treatments by implementing demonstration method and the control group which has 28 students treated without demonstration method. The instrument of the research was tests, pre test and post test. The types of the tests were jumbled words and matching picture. The data were collected and analyzed based on the result of the pre test and post test scores. Independent Sample t-test (manual counting) and SPSS program were applied. The findings show that the pre-test mean score of the experimental group was 51.92 and the control group was 50.00. While, the post test mean score of experimental group was 64.23 and the control group was 52.50. In addition, the obtained t-test was 2.032, whereas the t-table was 2.007 for α= 5%. Thus, the t-test result was higher than t-table (2.032>2.007). It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Since the t-test was higher than t-table, the implementation of demonstration method has significant effect on studentsÂ’ English ability at the 4th grade of SDN Sumberrejo 02 Malang. Based on the findings, the researcher concluded that the demonstration method may be used as one of the alternative methods in teaching English to Young Learners.
