Abstract

English becomes the most essential language in the world. Many people from many different countries around the world use it to communicate. In studying English, both in spoken and written language the students will find difficulties that can cause errors. In spoken language, students cannot really control his or her language because he or she is urged to utter his or her words immediately. Students cannot spend minutes just in order to utter a few words of a sentence. For studying the two skills of English, students should understand about one of the components of grammar that is part of speech. This thesis is focused on analyzing in grammatical errors especially errors in using part of speech. The purpose of the study were to know the kinds of grammatical error made by the second semester students of ESP speaking class at English Department, UMM and to know the most dominant grammatical errors made by the students. The researcher is interested more in the spoken language. It is because in speaking, there is spontaneity, it means when they usually communicate with others directly using English without thinking about the rule of grammar. The researcher used qualitative research design as the research design, because the researcher wanted to explore a problem and develop a detailed understanding of some phenomenon that happened based on the data from the students speaking. The population of this study was the speaking class students of the second semester. To make this study easier and representative, the researcher took 5 classes from 10 classes as the sample of the study. In this study, the researcher just took the sample among the population by, convenience sampling. This study used observation as instrument to get the data. Based on the data analysis, the students made 299 errors in using part of speech in their speaking. The errors collected are identified and classified based on the kinds. The errors in using part of speech were noun (41 errors), pronoun (32 errors), verb (154 errors), adjective (17errors), adverb (4 errors), preposition (30 errors), and conjunction (21 errors). There is no error of using interjection. Moreover, the findings show that the most dominant errors verb.
