Abstract

means that it is used for communication among people in the world. As an international language, it is necessary for us to learn it. But we know that studying English as a foreign language is not easy. Therefore, the students should be taught English from elementary level. English skills are divided into four skills. They cannot be separated each other. So, in teaching and learning process the four skills must be taught integratedly. In the process, it is possible that many problems rise in every skill and need the attention to give the solution for it. But in this study the writer focuses on the problems of teaching and learning speaking skill. This study aims to know the teachers' and students’ problems and to know the ways to cope their problems in teaching and learning speaking subject in ESP program. This research used descriptive research to obtain the information related the problems of this study. The data were collected by conducting interview, questionnaire and observation. The population was the third semester of Law Faculty and the sample was cluster random sampling. The sample was class C which consist of 37 students. The result of this research showed that the students’ linguistic problems were limited vocabulary, grammatical error, difficult in pronouncing the words, mother tongue used. Whereas, the non­ linguistic problems were limited reference, limited time in practicing English, less frequency in studying English, never had partner in practicing English, never had chance to speak English with native speaker, simply shame and there is no habit in practicing English. In coping the problems there was no significant different ways, these were asking to friend or teacher, opening the dictionary, practicing with partners, reviewing the lesson at home, and trying to always be active in speaking activities.
