Abstract

Teaching English to junior high schools is not the same as that to elementary schools. Therefore, the teacher should understand and design meaningful activities by using media to change an abstract concept into a concrete concept in teaching English. The media is intended to come up the studentsÂ’ motivation in learning English. This study is focused on describing the use of media in teaching English to junior high school at MTs NU Sunan Giri Talang Watuagung Prigen Pasuruan. The research problems were the kinds of media that are used by the teacher in teaching English, the problems faced by the teacher in teaching English in using media, and the teacherÂ’s way to solve the problems. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this study was the English teacher. He was the only English teacher at MTs NU Sunan Giri Talang Watuagung Prigen Pasuruan. The instruments used by the researcher to collect the data were observation and interview. The result of the study showed that the English teacher at MTs NU Sunan Giri Talang Watuagung Prigen Pasuruan only used visual media in teaching English, which included whiteboard,digital projector, and pictures. Those media were very useful and helpful to make the teacherÂ’s explanation easier and to make the students understand the explanation clearly. Unfortunately, in implementing the media, the teacher faced some problems. Those problems were: (1) the whiteboard was small and the position of the whiteboard was higher than the teacher. It could be solved by the teacher by asking help to the school staff to change and to move the whiteboard and also used the digital projector to show the vocabularies; (2) Digital projector could not well support the program of laptop and another problem was the electricity sometimes was off. It could be solved by the teacher by making good preparation and checking whether the digital projector could support the laptop or not and printed out the material for the students; (3) The teacher could not prepare and bring the good pictures to the class and another problem was related to the lack of teacherÂ’s creativity to make some different interesting media. It could be solved by preparing good pictures and making slide of the pictures bigger. Furthermore, the teacher asked help to his friend who had creativity in making interesting media and also attended some courses on how to make some different interesting media for the students. It could make the teaching and learning English run well.
