Abstract

Vocabulary is the core component of language proficiency that supports learners in learning four English language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Since vocabulary mastery is very important for students to learn English, the use of techniques in teaching vocabulary is important to help teachers teach vocabulary. This study aimed at studying the techniques used by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary to the first grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau Malang. This study tried to find the techniques that the teacher used in teaching vocabulary, the ways the teacher implemented the techniques in the teaching and learning process, and the studentsÂ’ response towards the teaching of vocabulary using those techniques. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design to obtain the data concerning the research problems. The subjects of this study were one English teacher and one class of the first grade that consisted of 39 students. There were three instruments used to collect the data in this study, they were observation, interview, and questionnaire. The result of this study showed that the teacher used five techniques in teaching vocabulary to the students; they were visual, opposites, translation, asking others, and using a dictionary. The teacher had various ways in implementing the techniques. For the visual technique, he gave some pictures of things like gardening tools or sport equipments to the students and he asked them to guess the name of the pictures. For the opposites technique, he gave some words and the students had to find the opposites or antonyms of the words by themselves. For the translation technique, he translated word by word. After he translated the words, he asked the students to write the words with the translation in their writing book. For the technique of asking others, he asked the students to ask him what words that they didnÂ’t understand in their task. In using the dictionary technique, he asked the students to use dictionary to find the meaning of words in their task. For the studentsÂ’ response, they had positive response towards the teaching of vocabulary using those techniques, it was proved by their average score of 78 which is categorized to positive response.
