Abstract

Literature is the art of written works intended to entertain the readers of use the imagination. Poetry is one of the major types of literature in a language where there is a musical element. Music is relevant with poetry, when people read poem, it is basically the same with listen to music because word of song called lyric. Commonly good songs use figurative language to express the imagination and meaning to the readers. Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different with literal interpretation, because it generally uses exaggeration and alteration to make a particular linguistic point. This study analyzed the figurative language in The SIGIT song lyric in album Visible Idea of Perfection. The SIGIT is the one of indie (independent) music produced. Indie was chosen because it has a great theme that can be taken which contains figurative language. In this case, the writer wanted to discuss the kind of figurative language used, the meaning, and the most dominant figurative that are found in three lyric of songs, they are New Generation, Live in New York, and Clove Doper. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative, because it only described about the object without making of hypothesis. Then the approach employed an expressive approach; it studied the literary work as an author's feeling. The data collection and data analysis were based on the SIGIT lyrics song in the "Visible Idea of Perfection" album. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found that there are 6 kinds of figurative language: 6 metonymies, 3 paradoxes, 2 similes, 2 metaphors, 2 personifications, and 1 symbol. Metonymy is mostly used because the SIGIT wanted to use words that denote thing directly, bring to mind connotation of speed, power, noise and forth, they also wanted to tell about the person's character such as idealism and the dissatisfaction with the condition around, that is similar to general meaning in every lyric; "New Generation" blasphemes the vicious circle linking malnutrition with stupidity, "Live in New York" that talked about a man who wants to move to a more attractive place; and "Clove Doper" was the comment of the nature of the people in around them.
