Abstract

This study was aimed to find the reasons that influence the English structure lecturer to use English-Indonesian code mixing and the studentsÂ’ attitudes toward the use of code mixing by the English structure lecturer at the second semester of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. English structure was chosen to be observed because it is one of the subject matter that is difficult to understand by the students, and thus needs much and clears explanation. Moreover, second semester was chosen because students at the second semester are still in intermediate level, means that they are not quite proficient in English, so that in the class lecturer mix their language. This study was intended to help the students as readers to comprehend the phenomenon of code mixing in classroom setting. The statements of problems of this study were: what are the reasons that influence the English structure lecturer at the second semester of English Department to use code mixing? And, what are the studentsÂ’ attitudes toward the use of code mixing by the English structure lecturer of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang? The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The research subject of this study was an English structure lecturer at the second semester and 40 students who were taking English structure subject at the academic year 2011/2012 and taught by English structure lecturer. The instruments used in this study were observation, interview, and questionnaire. Based on the result of observation in the English structure class, there were 34 utterances containing code mixing that used by the English structure lecturer, they were: 47.05% for checking the studentsÂ’ comprehension, 17.64% for clarifying the speech content, 29.41% for helping weak, 2.94% for giving rhetorical effect. Then, this study revealed another pedagogical reason to use code mixing in the class, and it was: marking the end of class 2.94%. Moreover, the result of giving questionnaire to the students showed that the students had positive attitudes toward the use of code mixing by the English structure lecturer. So, it could be concluded that the occurrence of using code mixing in the class was beneficial.
