Abstract

Besides as a tool of communication, language can be used as a study. Discourse analysis is one of the fields of language study which studies about language in use. Sometimes, when a speaker saying something, there is an action performed by him when producing the utterance. This matter is still in the field of discourse analysis which is known as speech act. Studying speech act is very important to minimize misunderstandings between a speaker and a hearer when the speech act, especially illocutionary act is performed. This study was aimed to find the speech act used by Puss in "Puss in Boots" film directed by Chris miller. The statements of problems of this study were: What are the speech act utterances used by Puss in "Puss in Boots" film by Chris miller? What are the types of speech act used by Puss in "Puss in Boots" film by Chris miller? and, What are the meanings of speech act used by Puss in "Puss in Boots" film by Chris miller? The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative because the data in this study was in the form of words and the data was explained descriptively. The object of this study was Puss, a main character of "Puss in Boots" film by Chris miller. The research instrument used in this study was document analysis. Based on the result of the data analysis, there were 122 speech act utterances were used by Puss in "Puss in Boots" movie. From those speech act utterances, there were 56 utterances were categorized as directives, 33 utterances were categorized as assertive, 18 utterances were categorized as expressives, and 15 utterances were categorized as commissives. Declaratives type of speech act was not found in this study because Puss was not someone who had special role in a specific context. Moreover, from those speech act utterances performed by Puss, there were 114 utterances which had literal meaning and only 8 utterances which had non literal meaning.
